Three HopIn screens: the home screen with Driver and Passenger buttons and match notifications; a match found for a passenger, with the shared route drawn on a map of Krakow; and a chat between driver and passenger about the pickup.

The problem

Transport is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions. HopIn was built for a two-week coding competition on the environment and climate, around one idea: help people who travel the same way share a car. Fewer cars means less CO2, less traffic and lower costs for everyone in it.

What I built

A mobile app in React Native and Expo with a Node.js backend.

  • Drivers add a ride: where from, where to, the earliest departure and the latest arrival, how many seats are free, and on which days: one day, this week, or for several weeks.
  • Passengers find rides going their way and join them. New matches arrive as notifications in real time ("We found a passenger for your ride").
  • Every ride has its own page with the start, the destination, the times, who is driving and who is in the car, and a preview of the route on the map. Problems can be reported from there.
  • Driver and passengers message each other in the app to agree on the pickup.
  • The profile shows the impact: rides shared as a passenger, passengers picked up as a driver, and how many cars that took off the road.
Three driver screens: the Add ride form with departure, destination, times, free seats and days; a driver's ride with two matched passengers and their pickup points; and the ride preview on a map.

Three passenger screens: a list of upcoming rides as driver and passenger; a passenger's ride with its driver, times and a map preview; and the list of conversations.

A note on what is shown here

There is no public code for this project. The screenshots use demo data: the names, rides and conversations are made up. The app's demo is in Polish.
